Kris Nickerson asked:

There are so many business management software solutions available today that a small- or medium-size business owner faces tough decisions about how to invest his or her resources. According to Michael Emaus, CEO of eEnterprise (www.eEnterprise.com), a division of NetSuite’s global reseller Skyytek Worldwide, there are basically three choices: custom applications, client-server applications, and on-demand Web-based applications. “The cost benefit analysis leaves no doubt that on-demand solutions provide the greatest integration and cost efficiency for growth-oriented enterprises,” he says.

“Customized software that is designed either in house or by developers for a specific business is extremely costly, in terms of development and hardware, and for maintenance,” says Emaus. He notes that, more importantly, such applications are not designed to adapt as the business grows, and so business owners are saddled with costly upgrades. “Small- and medium-sized businesses simply don’t have the resources to develop and maintain custom applications,” Emaus adds.

Client-server applications, which are typically licensed to a business, are also problematic. “Invariably, business owners are faced with the challenge of having several different applications that can’t ‘talk’ to one another,” says Emaus. Without seamless integration, owners have no way to, for example, cross-reference accounting and customer service data or company information and e-commerce. “This results in a hodge-podge solution that doesn’t give an enterprise the information it needs to grow,” he adds.

Growth is one of the two primary differentiators between Web-based on-demand business management software applications and its cousins. “On-demand solutions such as NetSuite represent a paradigm shift in the way business owners manage their customer, vendor, or partner base,” says Emaus. “NetSuite is not an application that ‘supports’ an existing business, but rather is one dedicated to ‘growing’ a business. Because it has four fully integrated components, it’s both highly scalable and highly customizable.”

The second major differentiator between NetSuite and other business management software options is that it is all functionality is available virtually instantaneously. “When we talk to business owners, we don’t have to spend their time or resources talking technology,” says Emaus. “NetSuite has taken care of that. Instead, we can talk about the individual company’s business goals, growth potential, and workflow.”

Lastly, the total cost of on-demand over a five-year period is substantially less than either customized or client-server applications. “Business Owners who think of on-demand as their most efficient, most productive, long-term employee” concludes Emaus, “have the most success. In the past, business owners have not been able to consider Information Technology as a profit center. NetSuite makes it possible, but you have to rethink everything.”

business management

Remy Na asked:

Personal finance management tips are cropping up all over the Internet as a result of the recent economic fears across the globe. But the worst effects are often noted in our own backyards where foreclosures have left whole neighbourhoods almost empty and where predator loan sharks pop up in unprecedented numbers. Unemployment is rising and the cost of fuel… well, it’s just another one to be added to the list. But at the same time one has to take business management into account. After all, a business is just as susceptible to the recent economic status as an individual and in some cases even more so. For those who own businesses, this is a time to start thinking about those things needed to keep their businesses alive in order to survive.

As an incentive to your success, the following list should help you cover the most basic of preventative measures to ensure that you don’t get caught in some of the more common traps.

Have A Back-Up Plan

The title says it all and is something especially applicable to those who’ll fall harder should the worst happen. Back-up plans can include anything from a financial cushion or buffer to the addition of a smaller sideline business which will be able to run itself. Guidance from someone who you know won’t have a vested interest in your back-up plan can be your most important asset in this scenario.

Save, Don’t Spend

A lot of businesses fork out a lot of cash on renovations and redecoration when times are tough which in many cases turn out to be a big mistake. Think about it this way: for every dollar you don’t spend, you won’t have to make a dollar. Channel unused funds into an area of your business where you know it will produce financial positive results.

Training

Never underestimate the power of training, especially those people who train other people and are responsible for them. Nothing will make customers happier than a well trained and helpful member of staff as they seem to be lacking nowadays. Being successful with your training will ensure that existing customers keep coming back and that new customers follow them.

Accept Change

Yes you may already be accepting small change, but the change we are talking about are those that move with the times. Stay abreast of the competition by keeping your eyes on industry and market changes.

These are but a couple of those tips available to those individuals in business management to cope with the current times of economic uncertainty. It is also advised to contact your local bank or financial institution directly for help and advice should you suspect troubled times are lying ahead.

Kansieo.com

Belsheba Nyabwa asked:

Businesses are currently developing a code of ethics which is meant to govern the way they operate in the current economy. Proper business management is increasingly embracing new practices in a fast changing economy. To be in the cutting edge a manager must be well equipped with relevant updates that guide him/her to make informed decisions that do not jeopardize the smooth operations of the firm.

This may include open door policy where a business owner becomes more accessible to his/her employees, customers and suppliers. A call for honesty and accountability is also essential, not forgetting a serene atmosphere for all employees. In today’s destabilized economy, every company is confronted by prerequisite implementations like retrenchment; shutting down of departments or branches which consistently make losses, in other words known us rationalization.

Companies therefore should facilitate ideas that bring in resources and enhance easy flow of business operations. The wise said “a good name is better than riches.” Those that have spent quality time building a name and brand can hire out the same and have other market players sail on. By doing this the company gets extra revenue that does not necessary call for monetary out-put. This process is known as franchising.

I would ask myself what is effective leadership and management? Who or what should gains more value in an esteemed firm? Is it the employees, company’s assets, or management board? The policy maker must carefully ponder before making any company policies that impact the future of all involved. For these policies will determine whether the firm will remain in the cutting edge.

Kansieo.com

Chris Jack asked:

Business management is one of the much appreciated jobs positions in the world. The manager is required to have a keen eye so that he makes sure that all the business in running smoothly and there are no stones on the way of success and no decrease in the amount of profit earned each year.

All organizations, including business has managers. They may not be called managers as different titles can be used such as leaders, directors, and head teachers and so on. A good business manager should have abilities to plan, organize, co-ordinate, command and control. In business management, the above mentioned abilities are used a lot. Some examples of these decisions are

o	Should we open a new factory in the north or south of a country?

o	What price should we charge for the new product?

o	Do we buy the new machine even though this will involve job losses for some of our workers?

o	Is expansion in another country going to be profitable?

In business management all the decisions are important so it is common to divide these decisions into three types

Strategic decisions are very important which can affect the overall success of the business. Tactical decisions are decisions which are taken more frequently and which are less important. Operational decisions are day-to-day decisions, which will be taken by a lower level of manager.

Taking decision is always a risk. Time, money and other resources will be used as a result of a decision. In business management, taking decisions is one of the toughest jobs. In a small business, such as a sole trader, the owner is the manager. This person will be taking risks with their own capital or savings. These people are referred to as true entrepreneurs or risk takers. If the decision goes wrong they could end up losing their own house and other assets. In a larger business such as a public limited company, the manager taking the decision in not risking his or her own capital but that of the shareholders. Although the manager is still taking risks, the cost of poor decisions will be felt differently. The manager may lose his or her job but it is the shareholders capital that is at stake.

These risks cannot be eliminated but can be reduced by following some simple steps. These steps are sometimes called the decision-making process.

o	It is important to establish the objectives of the organization.

o	Identify and analyze the problem to be solved.

o	Collect data on all possible alternative solutions.

o	The most important decision in business management is to make the final decision and put it into effect.

o	Look back to see whether the right decision was made. This is called review and evaluation of the decision.

Each department has its own manager. Like the manager of the human resource project will be responsible for

o	Forecasting staff needs

o	Recruiting staff

o	Preparing job descriptions

o	Keeping staff records etc.

In business management it is the duty of the managers to look over the departments.

Create a video blog

reynor asked:

Have you ever asked what propelled successful businessmen to meteoric rise?

One of the skills of great entrepreneurs is their ability to pin point few business activities, out of the many, that they can focus and work on. It is like being a great pianist and knowing what specific keyboard tab to press, among the many, and pressing them at an appropriate time.

You see, in the outside, business is a complex undertaking with multiple activities running simultaneously. It can be overwhelming.

However, if you know what specific activities are you going to check (like the pianist); you can run your business with such great harmony resulting to bigger bottom line – net profit.

Fortunately, all business activities can be boiled down to seven areas of business management.

The seven areas of business management are:

1) production

2) marketing

3) finance

4) accounting

5) human resources

6) management information system

7) product research and development

How do you know if your business is healthy? How do you know if your business needs help? Ultimately, your net profit will determine if you have a good business or not.

The art of business management (in my own definition) is the ability to detect problems and address them as soon as possible. Early detection is the key… before it reflects in your profit.

I made up a checklist to help diagnose the problem before it is too late. This is not comprehensive but I believe it covers the essentials.

1) production

Supplies

Do the supplies of raw materials arrive on-time?

Do you have alternative raw material suppliers?

Production

How many percent of the time are your machines operating?

How many percent of the products that you produce where defective?

How much is your production cost?

Delivery

How many percent of the orders are delivered on-time?

How many customer complaints did you receive?

How many customer returns did you receive?

2) marketing

How much money did you spend in advertisement?

How many additional sales (from new customers) did you get after advertising?

Is the amount of money you earn from new customers greater than the amount of money you spend for advertisement?

3) finance

Is your personal money and your business money separated?

(this is a No – No. For small business owners, make sure you have separate accounts for the two)

Do you have enough capacity to pay for your business debt (liquid asset greater than liability)?

Are your customers paying off their debt (for those with installment payments)?

Do you have ability to pay your suppliers and other debts on the agreed time (payables)?

Are your receivables growing (amount of money owed by people from you) ?

Is your business expense growing faster than your sales?

Is your profit margin growing? (Profit Margin = Net Income / Gross Sales)

4) accounting

Do you pay your taxes correctly?

Are your financial records updated?

Do you have a financial system? (you can use free software like quicken or you can hire accountants)

5) human resources

Are your employees productive?

How many percent of your employees are constantly leaving (turnover ratio)?

Are your employees happy and satisfied?

If you are in a technology business, did your employee signed non-disclosure agreement when they started to work in your business?

Do you have a good relationship with your employees?

Do your employees have a good relationship with one another?

6) management information system

Who else know your trade secret? (Ideal should be only YOU).

Do the bad news travel fast and reach you? (Being hands-on has an advantage here)

Are your files safe? (who knows the password)

Do you have back-ups?

7) product research and development

Do you know your customers?

Do you know why they are buying from you and not from your competitors?

Do you know your competitors?

Are you doing things to improve your products?

Are your products customized for the needs of the customers?

How much budget do you allocate to research and development?

Are you protecting your intellectual property rights through patent, trademark and copyright?

Mastering the art of business management is a lifetime process. This is worth repeating. The key to running a good business is to detect the problem early and address them. Go for offensive. Don’t wait for the problem to occur. Work to improve the seven areas daily.

Caffeinated Content – Members-Only Content for WordPress

Abhishek Agarwal asked:

At this juncture, you will have decided that you possess the skills necessary to be a great business manager. You may have read how you can lead large groups of employees. You may have found out that you will need to be great at getting people under you to do what needs to be done.If you have heard all of this and the job fits your personality, then you should be doing research on how you can be a business manager. When you are making plans for the career change, you will want to make sure that you know a lot about the field you are considering.

Some jobs look good but once you find out what they entail you will find they are not right for you. This is usually true in those coveted high paying careers. People usually get hung up on the prospect of making more money and they forget that they need to choose a career that is fun and interesting. If you dont want to make this mistake you will want to get a hold of at least one educational essay on your chosen careers in business management.

When looking for those essays that describe you career of business management, try to make sure it isnt by companies looking to hire new people because they tend to spin it towards thier business.Consider that if it sounds far too good, then throw the essay in the trash. Dont waste your time on pipe dreams, when what you need is the facts.

There may be a few great websites that will help you find information about working in those careers. You will want to try an essay about business management because the information will be unbiased.

Reading essays on careers on business management that has someone who may be bitter abut thier current position or even thier last one is just as bad as reading the one that is too much like an advertisement. If you look at the essay and it is unbiased you will know exactly what may happen in that kind of job.

Yes, you may see all the bad thing that could happen from the bitter person, but that only applies to the place he worked, making this essay totally useless.

Caffeinated Content – Members-Only Content for WordPress

Jeremy Gislason asked:

1. Set goals.

The number one business management tool you can use to better your business is goals. Long term goals, short term goals and mid range goals too. In fact, when you started your business, you wrote a business plan right? Did your business plan include your goals?

Business goals can include anything from how much you want to gross this year to how many hours you want to work. In fact, it’s a common business management goal to work as few hours as possible and make a substantial income. It’s one of the reasons many people start an online business in the first place.

So what are your goals? As you write down your goals, take the time to make sure they meet the following criteria. Are your goals measurable? It isn’t enough to make a goal that you want to make more money or you want to work less. How will you know when you’ve achieved your goal? Quantify your goals so they’re measurable and you know when you’ve achieved success.

Make your goals timely. What is your deadline for your goal? If you don’t have a deadline for your goal, they’ll slip away and never get accomplished. A deadline makes you accountable for your goals. Along with timely is the ability to make your goals attainable. There’s nothing worse than setting a goal that is so beyond your reach you end up feeling defeated. Create your goals wisely, establish a plan to achieve them and you’ll create a pattern of success that will expand beyond your business and into your personal life too.

2. Set your business up the right way.

By setting your business up, we’re talking about both as an entity, LLC, sole proprietor, s corp. etc.., as well as setting it up separate from your personal life. Get a separate business account. Obtain a business address and phone number. Separate and set up your business as an individual entity. This not only protects you legally it covers you with the government and tax system.

Take the time to meet with an accountant to get a best practices system established for accounting, this means all of your payables, receivables and taxes. If you take these measures in the beginning, you’ll make your business life easier both day to day and in the long run.

3. Automate what you can.

The wonder of doing business online is that there are so many features and tasks you can automate. Invoicing can be automated, shipping and fulfillment can be automated. Email marketing can be automated, tracking your web statistics, advertising and even content distribution can all be automated. Automate everything you can to enable yourself more free time to spend on tasks that generate profits or simply to give you more free time to enjoy your life.

4. Outsource well.

Speaking of saving yourself time. Outsourcing is a fantastic tool to give your business a step up and to give you a little less stress. Many self-employed business owners, work somewhere between 40 and 80 hours a week. It can be a lot of stress to own a business and handle every single task and responsibility. That is just one reason to consider outsourcing – save your sanity and spend more time focusing on you and your family.

There are a number of tasks you may be considering outsourcing. They generally fall into a few categories:

• Administrative tasks. These are often time consuming tasks that do not have a high hourly value, yet they need to be accomplished to make your business run effectively and efficiently.

• Professional tasks. These tasks often fall under the realm of copywriting, scripting, managing an affiliate program, marketing tasks and the like. They are important to your bottom line, however they can be effectively handled by an outside professional at a nominal hourly value.

• Technical tasks. These are tasks that may take you some time to learn how to do. They often fall under the realm of creating software, databases, special web languages, and so on. These are time stealers simply because of the time it would take for you to learn how to do these particular tasks. Their hourly value can be quite high. The impact on your bottom line varies from task to task. If you’re creating a new web element, it may contribute directly to profits.

Take a look at your job description. What can you outsource to make your business run more efficiently?

5. Tell people what you want, not how to do it – create systems and accountability.

Delegating responsibilities is good business. Here are a few ideas on how to work with others for maximum results.

• Establish a system of communication that works for both you and your employee. Use the system to include what you want accomplished and by when. Use the rules for goal setting; make the task measurable, timely, and attainable.

• Communicate the task clearly. Make sure that all deadlines, resources, and task responsibilities are thoroughly communicated. Ask your employee questions to make sure task is understood. Once you assign the task, let it go. When you let go, you can focus on tasks required to grow your business and improve profits.

• Upon completion of the task provide feedback to your employee. If constructive criticism is required, sandwich it between positive feedback for best results and to ensure a quality working relationship.

6. Business plans and budgets.

It is a good business practice to have a business budget built right into your business plan. This is particularly important if you plan on seeking financing for your business. Having an accurate and realistic budget will enable you to make educated spending decisions.

When creating a business budget your first step is often to determine your expenses. Your expenses include operating costs, taxes, the costs of outsourcing, marketing, publicity and so on. Make a list of all categories you anticipate having costs and all areas where you already know your expenses.

A budget is not a money diet, it is a spending plan and this is particularly important when it comes to your business. You want to make sure you have enough money to pay your bills and grow your business. Track your expenses and income and review your budget often. If you find you’re spending more in one category, make the adjustments in your budget.

When it comes to owning and operating a business, a few good business management practices can go a long way. Take the time to organize your life, outsource and automate what you can, establish processes to communicate your needs clearly, and structure your planning and spending in a way that makes sense for you.

Caffeinated Content

Terri Langhans asked:

Who hasn’t let a typo slip by or misspelled the CEO’s name or printed the wrong phone number somewhere? Those marketing mistakes don’t warrant an article. In fact, just one word of how-to-fix-it advice is sufficient: proofread!

Here are a few more important marketing mistakes that just about every business manager out there makes, along with a recommended fix that will help you attract more business and get better results from your marketing, regardless of how big or small your marketing budget is.

Mistake #1: We think that marketing is something we “do.”

“We need to do some marketing.” It’s the first thing you think when you need to boost business. Problem is, when you think of marketing as something you “do,” you’re usually thinking about publicity, direct mail, flyers, email, ads and promotion. Marketing is much more than merely promotion, and it’s rarely a quick fix.

The real fix is to expand your definition of marketing. Instead of thinking of it as something you “do,” think of marketing as anything that helps or hinders the sale or use of your product or service. This includes: your location, the attitudes of the person who answers the phone, your name, pricing, policies, proposals, personality and more.

Before you write a promotional word, do a “help or hinder” once-over. Make a list of what’s helping you attract business and what’s getting in the way. Figure out what obstacles you can quickly fix or remove? What “helps” can you enhance or spotlight? Until the help-or-hinder homework is done, working on promotion is premature.

Mistake #2: We breathe too much of our own exhaust.

We are such big believers in our businesses that we can’t wait to show it off. We admire our attributes and inhale our excellence. Then we exhale it all into our marketing communications. The problem is, when you do that, your marketing is all about you. And people don’t care about you. They care about themselves.

If your marketing is going to get any response at all, the first thing it must do is connect to something prospects care about. Connect before you convince. Try this four-step exercise:

Describe your products and services. Get the exhaust fumes out.

Identify one or two attributes or “attraction factors”

What is the benefit, the need or the want, that is satisfied by those attributes?

Why is that benefit important, personally, to the target audience?

For example, Joy dishwashing liquid (descprition) has real lemon (attribute) that cuts grease and leaves dishes shinier (benefit). “What a nice reflection on you!” (Connects to what she cares about.) Connect to what people want. Not to what you do.

Mistake #3: We all look alike.

A bank is a bank is a bank. Realtors, lawyers and consultants are a dime a dozen. The list goes on. But here’s the good news: the more two businesses look alike, the more important each difference becomes, and the more impact even the tiniest difference will have on setting you apart. Why?

Consider identical twins. What’s the first thing you do when you meet a pair? You try to find a little something to tell them apart. The same is true for your business. Your prospects are looking for a point of difference—just about anything—they can use to set you apart from your competition.

To find your points of difference, start with your points of contact, or “touch points” in your company. Make a list. Business card, fax cover sheet, invoice, phone greeting, front door, home page, etc. Then look at what the competition does and ask yourself how you can do it differently. Just a little bit will make a big difference, because your prospects are looking for them.

For now, try the Help or Hinder, Connect Before You Convince and Find Your Points of Difference tools to make your marketing more meaningful and effective. Be wary, too, of unrealistic expectations, faulty research, deadly bullet points and lack of follow through– four other common marketing mistakes.

Caffeinated Content for WordPress

Nielsen asked:

Info at hand is the "Business Portal" and central application in our CRBM Platform. Depending on your perspective or roles played in your business processes, you will find a benefit and perhaps many that apply to you. If you are a manager or book keeper there are several features that can help you track assets, inventory and help you gather solid business intelligence. If you are a production manager or talent resource there are many tools for managing project and improving efficiency or collaboration of your team. If you are a system administrator there are many tools for managing roles, teams and other system wide configuration and customizations.

There are really 5 clear value propositions that make the CRBM platform a perfect choice for virtually any small to mid-sized business:

1. Consolidated business management with reporting, automations, HR, Project Management with project profit loss tracking, Timesheet, and more.

2. Seamless integration with the Joomla CMS for virtually unlimited expandability for front end customer portal, partner portal or social networking community.

3. e-Commerce synchronization for a full transaction life cycle management and ERP inventory management capabilities with Shipping and Receiving.

4. Marketing Management:

1. A).Sales force automation:

Sales force automation includes lead capture, and the promotion of leads to Opportunities; Opportunity tracking with sales stage and percentage likelihood; Sales pipeline tracking, with graphical charts that offer drill-down from the bar or segment of the chart to the data that underlies it; Definition of sales teams and territories, to manage information sharing and track sales performance by territory; Sales forecasting and comparison of forecasts to quotas and actuals, by team or by individual; Lead source analysis of sales and opportunities; Flexible reporting, to extract precisely the information you want to see; Corporate calendar management, for arranging calls and meetings; and Integrated Inbound and outbound Email, which is automatically added to account and contact history. A target list for an email campaign may be assembled from a mixture of prospects plus pre-existing contacts and leads. You may create a target list as the output of a report, facilitating the targeting of prospects or existing clients with specific characteristics. A special Quick Campaign feature makes it quick and easy to perform spur of the moment email campaigns. You can also import lists of prospects (in either Comma Separated Values (CSV) or Tab Separated Values (TSV) formats). A mail merge feature enables the execution of letter mail campaigns, and target lists may also be exported to MS Word for a variety of purposes.

2). Document Management:

Info at hand enables the sharing of business documents – from HR claim forms and Marketing collateral to Engineering designs.

Multiple revisions may be stored ensuring only approved documents are used. Documents in any format can be filed, and may be searched by title, description, file type, status, department, keywords and owner. Documents may be associated with Projects, Accounts, Contacts, Leads, Opportunities, or Service Cases. A project can have all of the project’s documentation attached to it. An account, lead or contact can have all related documents attached. And supporting documents for a service case can be attached to it.

3). Inventory Management:

Info at hand includes a full inventory management capability. Two key modules perform the bulk of inventory management – Shipping and Receiving. In addition, the Sales Orders and Purchase Orders modules, as well as the Invoices module, evolved to support the tracking of partially received Purchase Orders, and partially shipped Sales Orders or Invoices

4) Receiving:

The Receiving module lets users in shipping/receiving document the receipt of a shipment, list the items and quantities received, and link to the related Purchase Order (and Sales Order if any). It documents the inbound shipping provider, number of packages and weight, the supplier’s packing slip number,

5) Shipping:

The Shipping module lets users in shipping/receiving record the shipments they send out.
